What do you get when you combine a Fall Festival, an annual Charity Auction with a country music performance and a Professionally Judged Art Contest? You get what’s happening this weekend, October 17th, in Malakoff, Texas on Cedar Creek Lake, just about an hour southeast of DFW!
The Malakoff Chamber of Commerce is coordinating this year’s Cornbread Festival on South Terry Street in the renovation district of downtown Malakoff as the activity hub for the main event.
Tybee Tuminello, Malakoff’s new Chamber President said this year’s event is expected to be better than ever starting off with a Cornbread Cookoff Contest. The cookoff is open to anyone who wants to participate. Visitors need to be sure to come hungry as there will be plenty of cornbread varieties to sample along with all the sides to go along with them!
Malakoff The event planners also expect to have a Fall Family Photo area set up with a professional photographer and equipment. The backdrop will be very ‘fall-themed’ with pumpkins, hay wagons and more. Tybee explained, “This will be a great opportunity for family get-togethers with kids, husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, grandma’s and grandpa’s to take advantage of a picturesque scene and make memories to keep and cherish forever.” The festival opens at 10:00 am and runs until 4:00 pm and admission is free.
Happening just over the South Terry Street Rail Road tracks at the Anding Bed & Breakfast will be the Dollar Social Charity Auction. Lisa Anding is hosting the event which is being held for the second year to benefit Maggie’s House, a Child Advocacy Center with the Henderson County Help Center.
In addition to the Auction, Award Winning Country Music Artist Kadie Lynn will be performing live at the event. Most people know Kadie Lynn was a finalist contestant several years ago on Americas Got Talent and has since become hugely recognized as a national-level singer, guitarist, writer and recording artist. The Dollar Social Auction will run from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Finally, as you cross back over the Rail Road tracks from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm head on over to the Artful Thinking Gallery for their Black & White Art Exhibition and Art Contest awards. The contest is open to anyone. Details are available with the Malakoff Chamber site listed above or you can drop by the Artful Thinking Gallery at 214 South Terry Street in Malakoff. Artful Thinking Gallery owner, Catherine Turn Golden says, “The contest will be professionally judged by a panel of expert fine arts critics. There will be three award levels with First Place winning $100, Second Place $75 and Third Place $50. The first place winner will also have their work printed on next year’s 2021 Cornbread Festival posters and T- shirts.”
There will also be a variety of street vendors sprinkled throughout the festival venue. They will have no shortage of interesting hand made gifts and assorted products and treats for sale.
